Voter photo ID

Posted on the 22nd March 2023

From 4 May 2023, voters in England will need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections.

This will apply to:

  • Local elections
  • Police and Crime Commissioner elections
  • UK parliamentary by-elections
  • Recall petitions

From October 2023 it will also apply to UK General elections.

There are many different forms of photo ID accepted, but if you do not have any of these, you can apply online or through the local authority for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

When applying for a Voter Authority Certificate, you will need to provide your:

  • name
  • address
  • date of birth
  • National Insurance number
  • Recent photo

You can find the full list of accepted ID here: Accepted forms of photo ID
